WVHM1001 VBMA Essentials of Western Veterinary Herbal Medicine

This is short course in Veterinary Herbal Medicine brought to you by CIVT and the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association is designed as an introductory, clinically based course in Western herbal medicine. It is designed for :
- veterinarians, veterinary students, qualified veterinary technicians and veterinary nurses who want to start adding selected herbal medicines to their range of treatment offerings
- practitioners or practice educators who don't wish to be herbalists but want to be able to advise clients who ask questions about herbs.
- Veterinarians who are not sure if they are willing to commit to undertaking more in depth study, to try it out.
Students who wish to continue their studies will receive a $100.00 rebate from the full price of WVHM1002 Foundation Course in Western Veterinary Herbal Medicine or WVHM1004 Graduate Program In Western Veterinary Herbal Medicine.
The course assumes a knowledge of animal physiology, anatomy and husbandry. The course is comprised of 6 Topics and takes 6 weeks.

At the end of this 6 week course participants will be able to:
- Describe the basic history of herbal medicine and in particular the use of herbs for the treatment of animals
- Understand where Western Herbal Medicine fits into the global herbal medicine systems
- Define phytomedicine
- Make three basic herbal preparations in veterinary practice
- Know the basic classification of herbal phytochemicals and their action
- Know basic terminology used in herbal medicine, from 'alteratives' to 'vulneraries'
- Begin to apply principles in the selection of an appropriate dose for a herbal medicine and for a patient
- Look up and look out for potential herb drug interactions
- Use 10 herbs for the treatment of animals in everyday cases;
- Answer clients' basic questions on herbal medicine.

| Course schedule 2012 |
This course is available three times a year, once you enrol and your enrollment is approved you will receive access codes to enter the classroom. Online real time tutorials are scheduled and recorded in case you miss them. The course takes approximately 30 hours to complete. The course is conducted online through myCIVT.
