CIVT1003 Getting Started Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine I

This short course is designed to equip you with a thorough understanding of the 20 or so most important formulas in Chinese veterinary herbal medicine. We keep it simple but effective, so you don't have to have a comprehensive understanding of Chinese medicine before you undertake the course. In fact, we build on what you already know by taking a biomedical approach to the herbs. We teach you a core group of herbs that will give you the best results for just a small effort in taking this course. We particularly cover skin disease from a basic Chinese medicine perspective to get you started with those frustrating cases.

If you are an acupuncturist, earn Continuing Education Credits through our affiliation with IVAS.

The course includes:

• 20 or so of the most important veterinary formulas, their individual component herbs and how they interact and work within the formula
• A complete review of their Chinese medical indications and how they manifest in modern clinical practice
• You learn their safe and accurate use, based on detailed history, physical examination, and laboratory findings
• How to treat a range of common but frustrating conditions in veterinary medicine with a focus on skin disease.

We emphasise classical herbal formulas that are available from a wide number of companies, and will give you tips on how to source and recognise good quality herbs. In addition, many tips will be offered for how to integrate herbs into veterinary practice including:

• How formulas are understood to work in conventional terms
• How to make appropriate changes to the prescription in light of various clinical outcomes
• How to address and avoid side effects.

It is typical after this course for veterinarians to experience success in the majority of cases they treat with herbs, provided they choose the right cases - and we'll show you how.
