ENVANHLT1    Environmental Animal Health Course

Unit Purpose

Environmental medicine evaluates and identifies potential environmental exposures that may lead to poor health or disease. Many diseases in humans are related to environmental causes, and now several inflammatory diseases like cardiovascular disease and even dementia have been linked to various pollutants. Toxic metals, pesticides and air pollution threaten human and animal health, and increasingly climate change- a symptom of the Earth's health too, plays a role too. There is a much debate when discussing our role in environmental stewardship, but there is little arguement about our desire to make our environment safe and healthy.

This unit develops your knowledge and understanding of the influence of the environment on animal health based on human environmental medicine- there is a lot of crossover between human and animal exposures, we live in the same environments- and a lot more is known about environmental medicine for humans.

Numerous environmental factors can influence health and disease and we examine those from an evidence based perspective. From heavy metals, food toxins, radiation, chemical exposure, to some hidden toxins: we look at how these might influence  animals in our care as well as how we might minimise risk and help prevent disease, as well as taking better care of ourselves.
