Students can apply for exemptions from modules or units in courses where they can demonstrate that they have the skills or knowledge already. These skills or knowledge may have been obtained from prior study (especially in similar courses) or even from life experience. Recognition of prior learning is a way of recognising these skills and prior learning. Obviously the prior learning must be relevant to a course of study offered by CIVT. Apply to your course lecturer or through CIVT's office. You will have to provide documentary evidence of your prior learning for each module you claim exemption from, and be assessed by the instructors or a panel established by CIVT. This assessment can only commence after the application fee is paid. In the event that you are successful, you will not have to complete the module you have been exempted from. This means that you will not be graded by CIVT for that module, but will be recognised as having completed the module. If you are unsuccessful, you have the opportunity to appeal to an appeal panel or to CIVT's Director. To apply for recognition of prior learning you pay an application fee of AUS $55.00 and assessment will cost AUS $50 per hour of an assessor's time. This fee includes initial support, counselling and assistance in applying. The total cost including issuing certification will be at least 50% of the qualification, course, module or unit fee.
Mutual Recognition
CIVT recognises full or partial (Complete Certificates or Statements of Attainment) qualifications awarded by Registered Training Organisations. Should you hold prior qualifications please present these to the CIVT staff to obtain the appropriate recognition. (There is a requirement that all prior qualifications will be verified by the issuing RTO).
Appeal and Grievance Mechanisms
CIVT has an Appeal and/or Grievance Procedure which is provided to students upon course commencement. This provides a fair mechanism for appealing disputed assessment decisions or grievances that may arise.
Disciplinary Measures
Students are expected to observe the rights of others at all times. Infringements of this policy will be handled in accordance with the grievances and appeals mechanism. CIVT reserves the right to request that a student leave the course should the student demonstrate severely disruptive or offensive behaviour, or fail to fulfill class assignments and requirements. A student will be given two warnings, in private, both verbally and in writing before dismissal.

As a training organisation, CIVT will comply with its legal and moral duty to respect the rights and beliefs of course participants and staff through avoidance of discrimination, recognition of the special needs of clients and course participants, physical access to courses, remediation and bridging programs, mentoring, culturally appropriate behaviour, and equal opportunity.
